CDC Offers Latest Estimates of H1N1 Toll
Estimates of 2009 H1N1 influenza cases in the U.S. from April 2009 to mid-January 2010 ranged widely, from 41 million to 84 million, according to the CDC.
H1N1-related hospitalizations ranged from 183,000 to 378,000, while deaths numbered between 8,330 and 17,160. The majority of cases, hospitalizations, and deaths occurred among adults aged 18 to 64.
The CDC says that making such estimates is “very challenging” because most people with flu don’t seek medical treatment, and some of those who are hospitalized might not be reported to health authorities.
